Ali Cerulli

ali cat embodies passion and grace in everything she does. Her dance grew out of a deep connection discovering the miracle of the human body and with nature, although she has some background in ballet and gymnastics. She has been an avid dancer for 11 years, as a way to relieve stress, exercise, and have fun! A lover of learning, she has explored some Afro-Haitian, Salsa, West African, Flamenco, Belly Dance, and Indian dance styles. Ali has been described as being part elven, and as long as she can remember, she would dance in the forests, on beaches, and in other wild places, invoking the movements of wild cats, birds, and even waves and clouds.

Ali discovered the Maori martial arts of poi and staves while studying conservation issues in New Zealand in 2001. Upon her return to the US, she searched for a way to learn these captivating dances, and then met an inspiring dance mentor, Caroleeena. Together, they grew in their poi, fire spinning, and the hoop. A sustainability activist for over a decade, Ali resonated deeply with the infinite symbolism of the circle. The hoop continues to help her in the journey to connect with the cycles of life. Her roots in service and activism lead her to take the hoop and tools for sustainability to communities around the world. The hoop is more than just a dance prop, but a tool to help empower children and adults to connect with their bodies and have fun exercising. The hoop has the power to spread health and happiness and breakdown social barriers.

Ali Cerulli has a BS in Ecology and a Masters Degree in Permaculture Design/Sustainable Landscape Design. Ali believes that in order to incorporate sustainable design into the mainstream, we must find a sustainable balance within ourselves. Dance and community service are key elements to create this balance.
